Partnerships and Coalitions
UICC establishes partnerships and coalitions with international organisations, professional associations, networks, NGOs and civil society organizations (CSOs) to give cervical cancer prevention and control high priority on governments’ health, education and financing agendas worldwide, as well as to assist in the implementation of specific actions at country level.
Working together, a joint resource-mobilisation effort will be orchestrated in support of evidence-based interventions in countries with the highest incidence and mortality. The UICC also calls for comprehensive and locally appropriate programmes including improved screening and treatment, vaccination and public and professional education. International partnerships and coalitions ensure broader representation, increase the range of available expertise and can maximize the impact of actions by pooling or coordinating resources. Concerted advocacy and awareness-raising actions have beneficial repercussions at country and international level and the lobbying potential of a coalition to influence health policies cannot be overlooked. It should be stressed, however, that ultimately there needs to be national ownership of the issue advocated by the coalition to ensure sustainability of solutions.
UICC is a member of the following coalitions and partnerships:
- The Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention (ACCP). In 1999, with generous support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, five international agencies launched a major new effort to prevent cervical cancer worldwide. This group of organisations, the Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention, is working to clarify, promote, and implement strategies for preventing cervical cancer in developing countries.
- Cervical Cancer Action (CCA): a Global Coalition to Stop Cervical Cancer is a community of organisations and individuals dedicated to working collaboratively to eliminate cervical cancer deaths worldwide. The Coalition seeks to maximise the impact of individuals, organisations and governments working to prevent cervical cancer globally through strategic advocacy, information sharing, human and resource mobilisation and collaborative partnerships.
- The HPV Vaccine Global Community is an online global network of people who share an interest in preventing cervical cancer and in the role of HPV vaccines in health programmes. The Community uses the internet to share and exchange knowledge, ideas and resources to explore the feasibility of introducing HPV vaccines within cervical cancer control programmes and thereby ensure that people around the globe have equitable access to the best available health care.
