Capacity-building fund

The fund provides support to voluntary organization members in resource-constrained countries to deliver community-based education and information-dissemination projects that are able to demonstrate long-term sustainability.

The fund was established with funds from countries implementing Relay For Life, an event that is licensed and supported through training and technical assistance by the American Cancer Society, a UICC member organization.

The Cancer Capacity Building Fund, which has so far dispersed US$270,000, prioritises projects that directly support the goals and objectives of the World Cancer Declaration.

The UICC cancer capacity-building fund supports efforts to strengthen the work of member organizations in resource-constrained countries in reaching out to local communities with evidence-based activities.

The fund was launched in October 2007. The project theme for 2008 was promotion of tobacco prevention activities related to the "I love my smoke-free childhood" campaign.

Out of 51 applications submitted in this first call, the review committee approved 18 projects for activities and two applications for small grants to finance study tours.

A second call for projects was launched on 15 September 2008. Forty-one projects from 27 countries have been submitted and 10 projects have been chosen from: Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay and Nicaragua.

The third call which went out in late 2009, produced 72 applications, of which 20 have been chosen for implementation in 2010.
