Previous award winners

The awards for excellence in cancer control recognize individuals and organizations whose vision has been an inspiration to colleagues and partners and whose contributions have led to major achievements in the fight against cancer.

They are bestowed every two years and presented in conjunction with the World Cancer Congress.

Outstanding volunteer

Award for outstanding volunteer: awarded to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in fighting cancer in or beyond his/her discipline and who has strong links to UICC.

  • 2008: Harald zur Hausen, Editor in Chief of the International Journal Against Cancer, and Nobel Prize winner for Medicine 2008.
  • 2006: Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor and seven times winner of the Tour de France.
  • 2004: Ranjit Kaur, cancer survivor and President of Reach to Recovery International and Leslie Sobin, Chair of the UICC TNM Prognostic Factors Cancer Project.

Outstanding member organization

Award for outstanding UICC member organization: awarded to a UICC member cancer organization that has demonstrated excellence in cancer control in and beyond its borders.

  • 2008: Turkish Association for Cancer Research and Control recognized for its prevention work and long-standing service to the patients in Turkey.
  • 2006: Tata Memorial Centre recognized for its commitment, motivation and teamwork as one of the largest Indian cancer centres.
  • 2004: Cancer Society of Finland recognized for its contribution to Finnish public health policy, implementation of mass screening, and creation of hospices.

Outstanding government official

Award for outstanding government official: awarded to an elected or appointed government official whose support for national cancer control efforts has significantly raised health standards for his or her country.

  • 2008: Janez Janša, Prime Minister of Slovenia, for firmly establishing cancer control as a health priority for the European Union and José Gomes Temporão, Minister of Health Brazil, for his contribution to cancer control.
  • 2006: Tabaré Vázquez, President of Uruguay, for his defining role in making Uruguay the first country in Latin America to become smoke-free.
  • 2004: Michael Martin, former Minister of Health and Children of Ireland, for his pivotal role in implementing a nationwide workplace-smoking ban.
