WORLD CANCER CAMPAIGN
Kilimanjaro and the 2009 World Cancer Campaign

kilimanjaro.jpgAbout the project

Brosie McCann, a cancer advocate, and Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor, will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro starting on 28 July continuing through 2 August. The event is taking place as an opportunity to raise awareness of the 2009 World Cancer Campaign ‘I love my healthy active childhood.’ This campaign, which was launched on World Cancer Day in February as part of the overall awareness campaign 'Todays children, tomorrow's world', is about showing people that the choices that they make in life, particularly young people, can help to better position them for a healthy future and reduce the risk of cancer later in life.

Why is the UICC involved?

Everyone is touched by cancer in some way. 30-40% of all cases are thought to be preventable and largely life-style related, so UICC is using this opportunity to raise awareness about the World Cancer Campaign and ‘I love my healthy active childhood.’ Being a role model for others, motivating them to take steps towards establishing a healthy lifestyle and doing their best to lower their own cancer risk and that of their children and peers is the reason Brosie McCann has offered to be a volunteer for the UICC.  While he is doing this by climbing a mountain, you too can make a difference by taking action in your local community.
