The 2010
campaign report, which has been launched to mark World Cancer Day (4 February 2010), highlights cancers that can be caused by infectious agents
(viruses, bacteria and other pathogens) and the means for intervention and
prevention.
Cancer-causing
infections are a focus of the campaign as an estimated 20% of all cancers in
developing countries and 6% in developed countries are known to be caused by
viral and bacterial infections. However, prevention through vaccination and the
adoption of simple protective or avoidance strategies, early detection and
treatment can prevent the vast majority of infections which are known to lead
to cancers later in life such as cervical, liver and stomach cancer.
