IARC Fellowships

Since 1966, IARC has awarded more than 560 fellowships to junior scientists for research training in cancer. As a result, IARC fellowships have made a substantial contribution to the development of cancer research in many countries.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is a UICC partner organization.

At present, the IARC fellowship programme is partially supported by the EC- FP7 Marie Curie Actions - People - COFUND

The programme offers five kinds of fellowship:

  • Postdoctoral fellowships:
These are offered to junior scientists from any country who wish to complete their training by working in an IARC research group in Lyon, France. The IARC is particularly keen to promote the development of expertise in cancer research in low- and medium-resource countries by training postdoctoral researchers from these countries who can return to apply their new skills and expertise. Therefore, applications from candidates from low- and medium-resource countries or with projects related to low- and medium-resource countries are encouraged.
  • IARC-Australia postdoctoral fellowship: This is offered for postdoctoral scientists who are Australian nationals and who wish to complete their research training at IARC in Lyon, France, working in an area of cancer research related to IARC’s mission and of priority for the Cancer Council Australia who provide the support for this programme.
  • IARC-Ireland postdoctoral fellowship: This is offered for postdoctoral scientists who are Irish nationals and who wish to complete their research training at IARC in Lyon, France, working in an area of cancer research related to IARC’s mission and of priority for the Irish Cancer Society, in particular in the field of epidemiology. This programme is supported by the Irish Cancer Society.
  • Senior visiting scientist award:
This award is offered for a qualified and experienced investigator with recent publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals who wishes to spend from six to twelve months at IARC working on a collaborative project in a research area related to the agency's programmes.
  • Expertise transfer fellowship
: This fellowship is offered to enable an established investigator to spend from six to twelve months in an appropriate host institute in a low- / medium-resource country in order to transfer knowledge and expertise in a research area relevant for the host country and related to the Agency's programmes.
