FAQs

Do you have any questions about the Fellowships programme? Take a look at the Fellowships' FAQ page to see if your question has been answered and if not, please contact the Fellowships team at UICC who will happily try to assist with your query.

Do I need to send my application in electronically?

Yes, since our expert reviewers have requested an online review procedure.
All application material as attachments should be sent in Word doc. or pdf format. Items that require a hand signature should be scanned and emailed as pdf attachments.
Should this option not be available to you, however, we accept faxed or mailed completed applications.

Are there any UICC Fellowships for surgeons?

If your project concerns clinical/surgical training, then the only scheme that offers a one month stipend support plus travel is ICRETT. UICC has no long-term surgical/clinical training fellowships.

Who can apply for a UICC fellowship?

All our fellowships, with the exceptions of the Asia-Pacific, Raisa Gorbachev, and Trish Greene schemes, are open to candidates from all countries.

Can UICC help me choose a host institute?

No. Identifying and obtaining an invitation from a suitable host is one of the selection criteria and we do not get directly involved in the process.

Can UICC help me with housing during my fellowship?

No. UICC is not able to help with housing.

Do I qualify for a UICC fellowship?

Eligibility criteria for all our fellowships require a basic University degree (usually a BSc or BA degree). Other requirements are that candidates must be on the staff payroll of their home organization or be an accredited volunteer of that organization.  Those attached to commercial entities are not eligible. Fellows must return to the home country at the end of the authorized fellowship period.

Can I apply for several UICC fellowships at the same time?

No, under the UICC fellowship conditions*, a candidate can only apply for one project at a time.

Can the duration of an ICRETT fellowship be extended?

ICRETT fellowships are of a one month duration supported by UICC and extendable to a total of 3 months subject to the formal written approval of the home and host supervisors and at no additional cost to UICC.  The home and host institute are expected to cover the additional stipend costs. After a maximum absence of 3 months, the fellow MUST return home.

When will I know the outcome of my ICRETT application?

UICC generally requires around 60 days (two months) from the date of registration for processing an ICRETT application through the international review procedure and for reaching a funding decision.

Would UICC offer support for conferences, meetings?

No. UICC has no fellowships opportunities that provide support for attending meetings or conferences. All our fellowship schemes cover specific research of clinical training projects to be held at host institutes abroad.

When can I re-apply for a fellowship?

You are eligible to submit a new application after completion of your current fellowship and a further six months have elapsed after returning to your home institute/country.
Membership in the Association of UICC Fellows (AUF) is also a pre-condition for further fellowship applications.
Applications that have undergone a review and selection process and were not approved for funding cannot be resubmitted to another fellowship scheme.  However, candidates are encouraged to submit new applications with a new project description.

Can UICC help fellows with the visa procedures?

As is clearly stated in the letter of award, it is the candidate's responsibility to obtain any necessary visas, arrange travel, etc. UICC does not get involved in this process. If necessary, the candidate should contact his/her home/host supervisors for advice/assistance.

May I apply for an increase in awarded funds?

No, UICC fellowship funds are fully committed at the time of the award and no additional funds can be made available.
UICC fellowships are intended to provide a contribution to the real cost and constitute a funding partnership between the home and host institute, UICC and the Fellow himself.

Although I did not get the fellowship, can I receive the reviewers comment?

No, these details are confidential and cannot be divulged.

If the price of my flight ticket increases, will UICC cover the difference?

No. UICC fellowships provide a contribution to the real cost and constitute a funding partnership between the home and host institute, UICC and yourself.

Do I need to renew my membership in the Association of UICC Fellows?

If you have paid in the past your joining fee of USD 50, you are now already a life-member of the association and no further membership fees are due.  If you wish to make a (most welcome) donation to the ICRETT fellowship scheme, you can make an electronic bank transfer to our account from any country.

How long do I have to be an AUF member in order to be eligible for further fellowships?

Once you are a member of the Association of UICC Fellows, you are eligible to apply for a UICC fellowship immediately.

Are there fellowships available that will cover my sabbatical?

There are no fellowships that cover a 12 months sabbatical.

Could I come for a period of six months to your Institution for training?

UICC is a non-governmental organization working with our member organizations worldwide towards global cancer control. We are not a research institute and do not therefore employ medical staff.
